Nnobi Community in North America Raises $40,000 to Support Education and Healthcare in Hometown

The Nnobi community in North America has raised $40,000 to support critical development projects in their hometown of Nnobi, Anambra State, Nigeria. The fundraising took place during their 2025 annual convention held in Maryland, USA, over the penultimate weekend.

The sold-out event featured rich cultural performances, including traditional dances by children and adults, masquerade displays, business meetings, and a dinner banquet. The convention theme, “Building Healthy Minds and Bodies: Investing in Education and Health Care,” received overwhelming support from attendees and friends of Nnobi.

Prominent dignitaries in attendance included Dr. Chris Ngige, former Anambra State governor and ex-Minister of Labour, whose mother hails from Nnobi. While addressing guests, Ngige recounted his developmental contributions to the town and donated ₦2 million to the cause.

“Nnobi is my home. What you are doing here is vital,” he said. “With unity and effort like this, we can make great impact.”

Also present was the Igwe of Nnobi, Engineer Muodum Nick Obi, accompanied by his cabinet and respected titleholders such as Akajiofo Nnobi, Prof. Ferdinand Ofodile and his wife, and Ikemba Nnobi, Hamilton Ezeonu.

Dr. Churchill Okonkwo, leader of the host branch, outlined the two key focus areas for the funds raised: upgrading Nnobi General Hospital to a satellite of a teaching hospital in the state, and renovating and constructing primary school classrooms across the community.

“The Nnobi 2025 Convention stands as a powerful testament to the strength of community and the determination of our diaspora to drive progress back home,” said Dr. Okonkwo.

Organizers and community members expressed hope that the projects will bring lasting improvements to healthcare and education in Nnobi, further cementing the diaspora’s role in grassroots development.
