NSCDC FCT Commandant Cautions New Officers on Responsible Use of Firearms
The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has urged newly trained officers to exercise restraint and professionalism in the handling of firearms.
Addressing 200 personnel who completed the Corps’ basic arms training at the command’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Odumosu emphasized that the right to bear arms comes with a deep sense of responsibility.
“A rifle is not just a weapon it is a responsibility. Let discipline, integrity, and professionalism be your watchwords at all times,” he stated. “The NSCDC uniform is not for intimidation or abuse of power. It represents service and protection.”
Dr. Odumosu, who has spearheaded multiple training programs since assuming office, reiterated that ethical conduct and accountability are central to the Corps’ operational philosophy. He described the training as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the NSCDC’s armed unit in response to rising security challenges in the FCT.
“This third batch of graduands is a testament to our ongoing commitment to capacity building. We’re not just training personnel; we’re activating our newly established Emergency Response Team a rapid-intervention unit trained to handle high-risk situations with speed and precision.”
He warned that despite their tactical preparation, members of the Emergency Response Team must operate strictly within the law and uphold the Corps’ professional standards.
The FCT NSCDC has now trained a total of 472 personnel in weapons handling, following earlier training batches of 135 and 137 officers respectively. Odumosu emphasized that this is part of a long-term strategic vision to improve the Corps’ readiness and security operations within the territory.
“This isn’t a ceremonial passing-out parade. It is a declaration of our resolve to enhance security, build capacity, and respond swiftly to evolving threats in the capital.”
He expressed gratitude to the NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for their unwavering support in equipping and empowering the command.
