NSCDC Transfers Policemen Who Allegedly Sold Baby for ₦25 Million in Ebonyi to NAPTIP

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has officially transferred the case of a group of police officers accused of abducting a woman and selling her newborn baby for ₦25 million to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for prosecution.

The Ebonyi State Command of the NSCDC announced the transfer following a petition by the family of Mr. Nweze Philip Obasi, who alleged that their daughter, Ms. Susannah Nwanneka Nweze, was abducted, detained, and her baby boy sold to unknown individuals.

According to the petition filed through the family’s legal representatives, Richbeke & Associates, four officers SP Loveth Uche, W/Insp. Maureen Otum, Inspector Valentine Akam, and Mrs. Nneka Akam of the NSCDC legal department were implicated in the alleged conspiracy, abduction, and child trafficking.

Ms. Nweze was reportedly lured to a secluded location at the Police Clinic in Abakaliki, where she was forced to relinquish her newborn. She was later paid ₦700,000 and threatened with death should she speak out.

The case gained national attention when Ms. Nweze, detained by the NSCDC, gave an extrajudicial statement implicating the officers. It is alleged that the NSCDC’s legal officer tampered with her original statement, dictating a new version under duress.

“We remain committed to justice and the protection of vulnerable persons. The transfer of this case to NAPTIP reflects our zero-tolerance stance on child trafficking,” said Ibeneme.
