NURTW Leader Arrested for Fatal Beating of Dispatch Rider on Lagos Island

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Shamsideen Adio, a senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following the alleged fatal beating of a dispatch rider on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday after a minor dispute between Adio and the rider, who was accused of scratching the NURTW chief’s vehicle.

The disagreement reportedly escalated quickly, with Adio allegedly calling in colleagues to assault the rider. The victim was reportedly beaten severely, collapsing at the scene.

Chris Nwandu, a journalist who documented the incident on social media, described Adio as a notorious figure in the area, known for violent attacks against tricycle operators, locally known as Marwa riders.

According to Nwandu, the suspect had allegedly assaulted another operator just days before, leaving the individual hospitalized.

A police source confirmed that the dispatch rider succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack. “The victim died from the beating, and the suspect has since been arrested. He is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the source said.

Efforts to reach the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The incident has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged abuse of power and calling for justice for the deceased rider. The Lagos State Police Command is expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
