OGC Nice, Players’ Union Condemn Violent Fan Attack on Terem Moffi and Jérémie Boga
Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has been placed on medical leave after he and his OGC Nice teammate Jérémie Boga were brutally assaulted by angry supporters on Sunday night following the club’s 3–1 defeat to Lorient. The loss extended Nice’s miserable run to six straight defeats across all competitions, heightening tensions around the Sir Jim Ratcliffe–owned club.
The violent confrontation erupted when the team bus returned to the club’s training centre, where nearly 400 furious fans many reportedly under the influence of alcohol—were waiting. Despite warnings about escalating tensions, players proceeded into the facility. Two ultras were allowed onto the bus to voice their frustrations, but chaos broke out as the squad began to disembark.
According to EuroSport, Moffi and Boga “were punched, kicked and spat on, with some of the blows said to be to their genitals,” and were also subjected to racist insults. Boga was reportedly targeted over ticketing issues involving acquaintances from Marseille, while Moffi was accused of smiling with former Lorient president Loïc Féry after the match.
Security personnel were unable to contain the crowd. Goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf helped Boga escape, while sporting director Florian Maurice was also attacked. Moffi, already physically strained, needed assistance from teammates to reach safety.
Medical evaluations on Monday confirmed both players suffered physical and psychological trauma. Moffi has been signed off duty until Sunday, while Boga received at least five days of medical leave. Both players have filed police complaints, prompting authorities to open a formal investigation.
OGC Nice condemned the violence in a strongly worded statement, acknowledging fans’ frustrations but insisting the assaults were unacceptable. The French players’ union, UNFP, also denounced the attack, stating that the physical and psychological safety of footballers “is non-negotiable.”
Moffi, one of Nice’s most important players and formerly a standout at Lorient, is now sidelined at a time when the club is battling poor form, internal tension, and the fallout from a full-scale police inquiry.
