Ojudu Claims Buhari Opposed Tinubu and Osinbajo’s Successor Aspirations, Yet Tinubu Outmaneuvered Him

Babafemi Ojudu, a former Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, has alleged that the former President Muhammadu Buhari did not support the presidential ambitions of his then Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Ojudu further stated that despite Buhari’s friendship and political ties with Bola Tinubu, the current president, he did not endorse Tinubu either. He claimed that Tinubu skillfully outsmarted Buhari in various ways.

Ojudu shared these insights during his appearance on the State Affairs podcast with Edmund Obilo. As someone who worked closely with former Vice President Osinbajo, Ojudu expressed his belief that Osinbajo could have performed significantly better than Tinubu.

He remarked, “I anticipated that Osinbajo would lose the primary, as I could see it coming. The system we functioned under limited our progress.

I often indicated in our meetings that although our endeavors—such as traveling and convincing delegates—accounted for 40 percent, the remaining 60 percent hinged on Buhari’s mobilization of his supporters. He was a one-man majority who failed to rally his team around Osinbajo, allowing Tinubu to outsmart him in numerous ways.”

Ojudu compared the failure to elect Osinbajo in the last presidential election to losing the opportunity to have Chief Obafemi Awolowo lead the country again. “I backed Osinbajo for the presidency because of my close observations of him,” Ojudu stated. He praised Osinbajo’s work ethic, extensive knowledge, and patriotic spirit, declaring him the best candidate capable of leading Nigeria at that time.

“Osinbajo would have greatly benefited this country. For me, it feels akin to losing Awolowo for a second time, as he matched Awolowo’s level of capability, dedication, and commitment.”
