Omoyele Sowore Responds After Lagos Police Declare Him Wanted
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has reacted following the Lagos State Police Command’s declaration that he is wanted for allegedly disturbing public peace.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore claimed the police action stemmed from officers failing to follow an alleged “shoot on sight” order issued by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in Oworonsoki. He added that despite attempts to contact Lagos Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh, he had received no response but plans to meet him to address the matter.
The Lagos State Police earlier stated that Sowore was being pursued for allegedly planning to incite public disorder and block major roads across the state.
Commissioner Jimoh warned that Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest and stressed that anyone attempting to disrupt public peace would face legal consequences.
According to police, intelligence reports suggested Sowore and his associates planned demonstrations at key locations, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park.
Jimoh described the alleged plan as criminal, citing risks to traffic and public safety, and confirmed that 13 suspects had already been arrested in connection with the planned protest.
Security measures have been put in place across Lagos, including major bridges and highways, to prevent disruptions.
The Commissioner also addressed recent demolitions in Oworonsoki, noting that affected residents were compensated, and urged citizens to remain calm while emphasizing that freedom of expression must not endanger lives.
