Osun Government Rejects Police Advice to Suspend LG Election.
The Osun State Government has rejected the Nigeria Police’s advice to suspend the local government election scheduled for today, citing concerns over police partisanship and the need to uphold the rule of law.
In a statement, the government expressed its dissatisfaction with the police’s security advice, stating that it was biased, partisan, and contravened democratic principles.
The government accused the police of openly supporting the All Progressive Congress (APC) and ignoring court orders, thereby breaching best practices. It also pointed out that the police had previously aided the APC in enforcing a non-existent court order, further eroding trust in the force’s impartiality.
Despite the police’s concerns about potential violence and security threats, the Osun State Government has opted to proceed with the election, citing a court judgment that authenticated the vacancies in the local government councils and authorized the state electoral commission to conduct the polls.
The government has urged voters to exercise their rights peacefully and promised to support the electoral commission in conducting a free and fair election.
