‘Our Boys Deserved Better’: Family Demands Justice After Abuja Fire Truck Kills Three Brothers

The Yusuf family is demanding justice and systemic reforms after a devastating accident in Abuja claimed the lives of three of their sons. The tragic incident occurred on May 9, 2025, when a Federal Fire Service (FFS) truck collided with a private vehicle at the ECOWAS junction in Wuse 2 during a firefighting mission at Avenue Plaza, Banex.

According to the FCT Fire Service Controller, Momodu Ganiyu, the truck was returning to refill its water supply and was speeding with its siren on when it struck a Toyota Camry entering the junction from a side street. Three brothers Yusuf Attahir Yusuf (22), Yusuf Tahir Yunus (19), and Muhammad Attahir Yusuf (14) were killed in the crash, while another person was injured.

In a deeply emotional public letter titled “A Thank You Note from the Yusuf Family,” the bereaved relatives recounted how the fire truck fled the scene without providing assistance or alerting emergency services.

“Instead of stopping to render aid or alert authorities, the truck fled the scene,” the family wrote.

The statement also condemned the delayed and inadequate emergency response. Agencies arrived late, rescue equipment was reportedly lacking, and the ambulance that eventually arrived was poorly equipped. Maitama Hospital, where the victims were taken, allegedly lacked critical life-saving facilities.

“In their darkest hour, our boys were failed at every level by the very systems meant to protect them,” the family said.

While decrying institutional failures, the Yusuf family expressed deep gratitude to the many Nigerians who stood by them in their grief. Thousands visited their home, and good Samaritans reportedly spent over three hours trying to rescue the trapped boys.

“While the institutions of the Nigerian state failed our children, ordinary Nigerians surrounded us with compassion, solidarity, and shared grief,” the family said.

Describing the deceased as “bright, compassionate, and full of promise,” the family vowed to honour their memory by pushing for lasting change. They called on the government to launch a transparent investigation, overhaul emergency response systems, and ensure hospitals are equipped to save lives.

“Our boys deserved better. All Nigerians deserve better. Let their passing ignite a commitment to accountability, justice, and systemic change.”
