Outrage as Student’s Spine Is Broken for Rejecting Cultist’s Advances

A disturbing incident at a Nigerian university has sparked outrage online after a female student was allegedly attacked by a cultist for refusing to share her phone number, resulting in a serious spinal injury.

A female student from an undisclosed Nigerian university has reportedly been left unable to walk after a violent assault allegedly carried out by a cultist. The attack, according to reports, occurred after she declined to give the individual her phone number.

The incident came to public attention through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @VivianRora, who identified the victim as her cousin. Vivian shared that the young woman suffered a broken spine as a result of the brutal assault, and has not been able to stand or walk since.

“My cousin, a student of a Nigerian institution, was brutally attacked by cultists. They broke her spine, and since that day, she hasn’t been able to stand,” she wrote.

“Her life changed forever. And all this happened because she refused to give them her number. I detest cultism and cultists!”

The post quickly went viral, drawing thousands of reactions from outraged Nigerians, many of whom condemned the attack and called for urgent reforms and security interventions in tertiary institutions.

Social media users have taken to X to share their frustration and fear over the growing issue of cult-related violence in Nigerian schools:

@Victor_Gameboy: “Still has nothing to do with poor parenting. Don’t blame the parents for the sins of the children.”

@Sassiepresh: “I’ve had my fair share of attack and harassment from cultists. I hate them.”

@murkiiis: “They collect numbers just to assert dominance. Some may never even call. As a lady, just give them — even if it’s a fake one.”

@AlliOlabisi5: “Anyone who schooled in Ogun Poly or lived in Abeokuta in the ‘90s knows this. Students were killed for refusing cultists.”

@tha_girrl: “Some of us now offer our number before they even ask, just to avoid trouble. Na who go reply later remain.”

Cultism remains a major security concern in many Nigerian tertiary institutions. While the government and school authorities have made attempts to clamp down on such groups, many students continue to suffer intimidation, harassment, and in some cases, fatal attacks.

This tragic incident is yet another reminder of the urgent need to tackle cultism in Nigerian schools and ensure safer environments for students. As calls for justice grow louder online, the public awaits official response and accountability.
