Oyo Govt Approves ₦7.7bn for High-Tech Surveillance Aircraft to Boost State Security
The Oyo State Executive Council has approved the purchase of two state-of-the-art surveillance aircraft valued at ₦7.76 billion to enhance security operations across the state.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, following the council’s meeting on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the aircraft DA 42 MNG models are equipped with advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) technology, capable of identifying threats from both high and low altitudes.
“The aircraft are being procured for ₦7,763,360,000 and will support Amotekun and other security agencies in locating and neutralizing criminal elements, especially in remote hideouts,” the statement noted.
The aircraft are also expected to assist in addressing critical security challenges including banditry, illegal mining, and kidnapping across Oyo’s expansive terrain.
Explaining the rationale behind the selection of fixed-wing aircraft over helicopters, the council highlighted the cost-effectiveness and ease of maintenance of the DA 42 models, noting that the Nigerian Air Force already operates similar aircraft enabling operational synergy.
In addition to the aircraft, the council approved substantial funding for ongoing infrastructure projects. These include:
₦83.04 billion for completing the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, including bridges, interchanges, and clearance of key sections in Molarere, Odo-Oba, and the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University axis.
₦36.35 billion for the asphalt overlay of major roads, including Secretariat Road, Trans Amusement–UI–Sango Road, and Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Road.
₦6.80 billion for the reconstruction of the Mobil–Oluyole Industrial Estate road network.
₦595 million allocated for direct intervention in the operations and maintenance of the Light-Up Oyo Solar Project, with a monthly provision of ₦190 million for sustained upkeep.
The government assured residents that at least 72 kilometers of the circular road will be completed before the end of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
These efforts, the statement added, underscore the administration’s commitment to boosting security, driving infrastructure development, and improving the quality of life for residents.
