Pastor Adeboye Urges Christians Not to Trade Their Souls for Wealth Amid Social Media Reactions

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has generated widespread reactions on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) after issuing a stern message to Christians during the church’s 73rd Annual Convention, themed “The Overcomers.”

During his sermon, Pastor Adeboye urged Christians to be mindful of their priorities, cautioning against placing material possessions above spiritual growth. He referred to such actions as “an act of stupidity.” “God does not hate enjoyment,” he stated.

“But the body you pamper, shine, and make up will perish one day. Take care of the spirit, for that is what will go to heaven. The body does not want you to be an overcomer.” He added, “If you are pursuing wealth at the expense of your soul, that would be stupidity. What happens when you die? How many of those things can you take with you?”

His comments sparked responses online, particularly from well-known social media critic Daniel Regha, who took issue with Nigerian pastors preaching spiritual discipline while allegedly living in luxury.

Regha wrote: “Pastor Adeboye reportedly owns a private jet, a mansion, has access to luxury vehicles, but he’s preaching ‘against prioritising material wealth over their spiritual well-being.’ Many top Nigerian Men of God are known to live a lavish lifestyle, almost never practising what they preach.”

@Seunfunmi_mi responded: “You don’t understand English?? Don’t make it a priority is different from don’t have it. If you can afford it buy it, but don’t make it a must that you will go and deep your hands into fraud or illegal things.”

@yinkaobebe said: “I see your sentiments and I agree.

But for an 80-year-old man, who has worked all his life and made such incredible impact and name, he can fly as many jets as he wants if he can afford it. Otherwise, why we dey work? We need to be able to speak to waste and in the same breath.”

@Coach_Ehis wrote: “If you think there’s profit, go and be a man of God too.” @lamemzy added: “Nigerian pastors are con men. Almost all of them. It’s so clear.”

@skidy_jay said: “Bro go and open a church if it’s easy, he start like that, he was a spiritual person before he became a pastor. Anything you do, do it online with God.”
