PDP Weakens in North as APC Eyes High-Profile Governor Defections

Concerns are rising that Nigeria could drift toward a one-party state as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) struggles to retain its northern strongholds amid a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Once dominant, the PDP now governs only eight states: Bauchi, Oyo, Adamawa, Osun, Plateau, Taraba, Zamfara, and Rivers its weakest position since 1999.

Recent defections by governors such as Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Peter Mbah (Enugu) have intensified fears that Plateau, Taraba, Zamfara, and Adamawa could soon follow suit.

Political analysts warn that these defections, often motivated by access to federal power rather than ideology, undermine opposition accountability and threaten multiparty balance in Nigeria’s democracy.

The APC has confirmed ongoing talks with several PDP and Labour Party governors. Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), revealed that governors from Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia are likely to defect before year-end.

“The APC is a home for all progressives,” Arodiogbu said. “We are not just expanding in numbers but in quality leadership.” He added that the defections would strengthen the party ahead of the 2025 congresses and 2027 elections.
