Peter Obi at Center of Political Rumors as Allies Clarify Presidential Plans for 2027
Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has been at the center of swirling rumors regarding his political future as some allege he is moving away from the LP even as he and his allies clarify their plans for the 2027 presidential election.
Despite reports suggesting Obi’s departure from the LP to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) he has firmly stated that he remains a Labour Party member while participating in an opposition coalition adopting the ADC as its platform to contest the 2027 polls.
On July 11, 2025, Obi reiterated during a Labour Party campaign event that he had not left LP and emphasized that the coalition movement, which includes many LP members of the National Assembly is a strategic alliance rather than a party switch.
He insisted If anybody asks you which party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell him Peter Obi is in Labour Party. If anybody asks you about the coalition, tell him the coalition is for 2027.
Obi confirmed his intention to run for president again in 2027 expressing seriousness about his ambition and willingness to serve only one four-year term if elected.
He stressed that the coalition is focused on national issues such as security, economic revival and effective governance and would not be driven by mere political convenience or personal gain.
The Labour Party, however, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Obi formally resign from the party due to his coalition alignment with ADC which some in the LP see as a betrayal.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary labeled the coalition members as power-hungry individuals whose alliance does not represent LP’s values.
Obi has dismissed such accusations, clarifying that the coalition is not an anti-party movement but a collaborative effort to unify opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others have joined this coalition under ADC to prevent the fragmentation of votes witnessed in previous elections and to present a united front in 2027.
In summary, while speculation surrounds Peter Obi’s political alignment, he remains committed to contesting the 2027 presidential election under the Labour Party banner actively participating in a broader opposition coalition using ADC as a strategic platform. The political dynamics continue to evolve amid calls for clarity from all stakeholders and the electorate.
