Peter Obi Engages in Talks With PDP, Other Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, is reportedly in active discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political stakeholders in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

This was confirmed by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. According to Yunusa, Obi remains open to collaborative efforts with political parties and individuals committed to national progress.

“It is no longer a secret. The PDP has made and is still making overtures,” Yunusa said. “Several of their leaders have spoken publicly about reaching out to Mr. Peter Obi.”

He reiterated that Obi’s interest has always been driven by the desire to build a better Nigeria, rather than personal ambition.

“As our principal has repeatedly said, it’s about rescuing Nigeria from its current socio-economic challenges. It’s not about Peter Obi; it’s about the people of Nigeria,” he added.

Although no specific decisions have been finalized, Yunusa noted that discussions are ongoing and any resolution will be made collectively in the best interest of the nation.

Adding to the conversation, Dr. Katch Onanuju, a founding member of the Obidient Movement, described the talks as a positive step. He emphasized the importance of opposition unity, stating:

“Most of the issues the opposition is grappling with today began within the PDP. Solving them requires unity and a shared purpose.”

Onanuju recalled that both Obi and other key figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were PDP members prior to the 2023 elections. He cited internal disputes, particularly over the zoning of the party’s presidential ticket, as the cause of the exodus that led to Obi’s move to the Labour Party.

He referenced the actions of the G-5 Governors, led by Nyesom Wike, who despite staying in the PDP, opposed the presidential candidate Atiku in 2023. Onanuju believes the 2027 election presents an opportunity for the party to correct its past mistakes and foster national inclusiveness.

Meanwhile, Professor Jerry Gana, a respected PDP elder, expressed optimism during an appearance on Arise TV, noting that Peter Obi would be a formidable candidate if chosen by the PDP.
