Peter Obi: “If I Become President, the North Will Celebrate Me”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed confidence that the northern region of Nigeria will embrace and celebrate his leadership if he is elected president in 2027.

Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television, Obi emphasized that the North remains Nigeria’s greatest untapped asset, highlighting its large population and expansive arable land. However, he lamented that insecurity and poor governance have continued to stifle the region’s potential.

“We have voted based on incompetence, tribe, and religion. It’s time to vote for competence,” Obi stated.
“The biggest asset of this country lies in the North the vast uncultivated lands. I will tackle the insecurity there decisively. If I become president, the North will celebrate me because I understand the root of the problem.”

In a related development, Obi recently made headlines for his continued support of educational excellence. He donated ₦10 million to St. John Vianney Science College, Anambra, following the school’s victory at an international science debate competition in June 2025.

During his visit to the school, Obi underscored the importance of education in driving national development, noting that Nigeria’s underperformance on the global stage stems largely from poor investment in its human capital.

“The most valuable asset of any nation is its people. Education is the most meaningful investment a country can make,” he said.

“If oil alone made a country rich, Venezuela would be the wealthiest nation in the world they have ten times more oil than Nigeria. But what truly drives progress is knowledge.”

Obi criticized the nation’s leadership for focusing too much on consumption and celebrations rather than building capacity for future growth.

“The problem with Nigeria is that our leaders are too busy celebrating and wasting time. We need to focus on building our human resources,” he added.

As Nigeria heads toward the 2027 general elections, Obi’s statements continue to resonate with a growing number of citizens seeking competent and visionary leadership.
