Peter Obi: My Focus is on Nigerians’ Welfare, Not Power Coalitions
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed his disinterest in any political coalitions aimed solely at seizing power without prioritizing the well-being of Nigerians.
He emphasized that the current state of Nigeria is dire, with increasing poverty and widespread suffering among the populace.
Speaking in Abuja during a national conference themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” Obi reiterated the need for discourse centered around the future of the nation rather than mere power struggles.
The conference was hosted by organizations including the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development, and the Centre for Democracy and Development.
Obi stated, “We must focus on Nigeria. Let’s discuss solutions for securing the welfare of our citizens, ensuring access to education for our children, and finding ways to improve the country’s situation.
This is far more vital than any coalition aimed at power acquisition.”He also highlighted the necessity of ending the monetization of politics, which he claims exacerbates corruption and hinders genuine progress.
Obi warned that allowing such practices perpetuates the cycle of public fund theft, where those who misuse funds to win elections are rewarded with power and immunity from prosecution.
