Peter Obi: Nigeria Cannot Thrive Amid Rampant Corruption and Criminality

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that Nigeria cannot effectively address hunger or restore dignity to its citizens as long as corruption and criminality dominate the country’s governance.

In a post shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi highlighted the stark reality facing millions of Nigerians, noting that hunger and poverty are not mere statistics but a daily struggle for many.

The ex-governor of Anambra State attributed the crisis to ineffective leadership lacking both capacity and compassion, leaders who fail to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians in their decision-making.

Obi cited recent United Nations data indicating that approximately 34 million Nigerians face acute food insecurity, while about 63 percent of the population roughly 133 million people live in multidimensional poverty.

He further warned that inflation, despite being underreported, hovers near 30 percent. Coupled with rising unemployment and poor economic management, these factors have nearly obliterated Nigeria’s once-thriving middle class, pushing many families into poverty.

“Other nations have faced similar challenges and turned their fortunes around through disciplined leadership, sound economic policies, and a total commitment from the leaders to invest in human development and pulling their people out of poverty,” Obi added.

His comments underscore ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s socio-economic trajectory and the urgent need for reforms to restore hope and prosperity to the nation.
