Peter Obi Rejects ₦120M House Gift, ₦20M Birthday Bash Donates to Schools Instead
In a striking display of modesty and social responsibility, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed he turned down a ₦120 million house gift and a lavish ₦20 million birthday celebration, opting instead to channel the funds toward education and youth empowerment in Anambra State.
Peter Obi, who recently marked his 64th birthday, said he rejected a ₦120 million house gift offered in his honour. Rather than accepting the luxury property, Obi instructed that the funds be used to build classrooms in Agulu, Ekwulobia, and Abatete three communities in Anambra State.
He also declined a ₦20 million birthday party, choosing to invest in digital literacy by donating 200 desktop computers to public schools in the state. The gesture underscores his long-standing commitment to modest living and nation-building, values he has consistently championed throughout his political career.
The former governor spent his birthday quietly in Rome, where he said he dedicated time to praying for Nigeria and encouraging support for impactful community projects.
Known for his simple lifestyle, Obi has often emphasized the importance of humility and purpose. He once disclosed that he owned just one wristwatch and two pairs of black shoes—a sentiment that continues to resonate with many of his supporters.
“I believe in impacting lives, not celebrating birthdays with extravagance,” Obi said in a statement. “Our children need classrooms and tools for a better future. That is where our priorities should be.”
