Police Inspector Nabbed for Robbery and Extortion in Edo

The Edo State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the arrest of a serving inspector and three civilians for robbery, harassment, and extortion.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, the officer, identified as Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi, was arrested along with three civilian accomplices Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho who had been working with him to extort and harass residents of Benin City.

Their arrest on August 15, 2025, was carried out by operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team.

The statement read:

“The Edo State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled a criminal syndicate involving a serving police officer and civilians engaged in extortion, brutality, and robbery against innocent citizens in Benin City. This follows a viral video in which a victim alleged that he was abducted by policemen, his phone and belongings forcefully taken, and subjected to intimidation.”

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered the suspects’ immediate arrest after receiving multiple complaints. Operatives later intercepted them with a silver Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items.

The Command strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as shameful and criminal. Agbonika reiterated that there would be “no hiding place for rogue elements within the Force” and stressed the Command’s zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct.

Police authorities also warned all officers that anyone caught engaging in misconduct, extortion, brutality, or corrupt practices would be swiftly dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.

The Command further urged members of the public including the victim in the viral video to come forward with credible information to aid investigations. Yamu assured that the police remain committed to protecting lives, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Force.
