Police Rescue Man Who Attempted Suicide on High-Tension Pole in Anambra
Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command successfully rescued a 28-year-old man Okwudili David Onyiba who attempted to take his own life by climbing a high-tension power transmission pole in Awada Idemili North Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening behind Grace of God Mission off NEPA Road.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesperson, police quickly responded to distress calls, cordoned off the area to prevent danger and managed the crowd that had gathered at the scene. After several minutes of persuasion involving both the police and concerned members of the public, Onyiba eventually climbed down safely.
He was immediately taken into protective custody at the police station, where he was identified and placed under close watch.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu has ordered comprehensive medical and mental health evaluations for Onyiba while assuring the public of the police command’s commitment to supporting his well-being.
The police also urged the public to always seek lawful and peaceful methods to resolve personal challenges and to reach out to friends, family or support groups when facing distress.
