Pope Leo XIV Urges Immediate Release of Kidnapped Clergy and Students in Nigeria

Pope Leo XIV has voiced profound concern over the recent spate of kidnappings targeting priests, worshippers, and students in Nigeria and Cameroon.

During his address, the Pope expressed deep sorrow over the rising attacks on churches, schools, and religious communities, stressing that these acts not only endanger lives but threaten institutions meant to provide refuge and guidance.

“I feel great pain for the many young men and women who have been abducted and for their distressed families. I make a heartfelt appeal for their immediate release and urge the authorities to act swiftly to secure their freedom,” Pope Leo said.

The Pope’s remarks come amid growing insecurity in West and Central Africa, where banditry and insurgent activities continue to disrupt lives.

He called on governments and security agencies to intensify protective measures for civilians, particularly vulnerable groups such as students and religious workers. Additionally, he encouraged the global Christian community to unite in prayer for the safe return of the victims, adding:

“Let us pray for our brothers and sisters, and that churches and schools may always remain places of safety and hope.”
