Power Sector Shake-Up: AEDC Confirms Dismissal of 800 Staff After Union Negotiations

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has terminated the employment of about 800 staff members as part of an ongoing restructuring exercise.

The move comes amid Nigeria’s persistent power supply challenges and rising operational costs within the electricity sector.

According to a reports, the mass layoff began on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, following days of tense discussions between AEDC management and labour unions.

“The original plan was to disengage 1,800 workers, but after negotiations with the unions, the number was reduced to about 800,” a source within the company disclosed.

A sample disengagement letter obtained by journalists described the move as part of a “rightsizing process”, assuring affected employees of full payment of entitlements once clearance procedures are completed.

AEDC’s Head of Customer Experience, Kenechukwu Ofili, confirmed that the restructuring was a standard internal process aligned with the company’s operational reforms.

“This exercise followed due process and internal guidelines. It’s part of our continuous effort to enhance efficiency,” Ofili stated.
