President Bola Tinubu Orders Fast-Track Rollout of Free Healthcare and Pension Reforms for Low-Income Retirees
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the immediate implementation of a free healthcare initiative for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) alongside urgent pension reforms designed to ensure dignity and social protection for vulnerable pensioners across the country.
The directive followed a briefing at the State House in Abuja by Omolola Oloworaran Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom) who updated the president on ongoing efforts to safeguard pension fund assets amid inflation and economic challenges.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of swiftly rolling out the free healthcare services to provide much-needed relief for retirees struggling with healthcare costs.
Further, the president ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee as a safety net for the most vulnerable retirees.
He also called on PenCom to resolve longstanding issues regarding police pensions acknowledging the sacrifices of security personnel and stressing their right to retire in dignity.
Tinubu’s directives form part of a broader commitment by his administration to enhance social protection, promote inclusive growth and ensure the welfare of ordinary Nigerians in retirement.
Plans are also underway to introduce foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
The reform measures have been welcomed by many retirees, although some groups, particularly retired police officers, continue to seek full withdrawal from the CPS, citing concerns about the scheme’s structure and benefits.
This initiative highlights the government’s renewed focus on strengthening the pension framework and healthcare support system in Nigeria aiming to provide retired citizens with social security and improved quality of life.
