President Tinubu Proposes ₦94.9 Billion Budget for Sports Development in 2025
In a landmark move to revitalize the sports sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proposed an unprecedented budget of ₦94.9 billion for sports in 2025, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s allocation of ₦29 billion.
This 227% increase aims to support various initiatives, including the construction of a world-class anti-doping laboratory and the rehabilitation of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
During a recent budget defense session at the National Assembly, the House Committee on Sports commended President Tinubu for his commitment to advancing sports development in Nigeria. The allocated funds will address critical challenges such as dilapidated sports facilities and inadequate financial support for over 40 sports federations.
Honourable Kabiru Amadu, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, expressed confidence that this budget would mark a turning point for sports management in Nigeria. The increased funding will tackle issues such as decaying infrastructure and enhance training programs to improve Nigeria’s performance in sports, he stated.
A significant portion of the budget is earmarked for infrastructure development, including ₦23.8 billion for the provision of office buildings and sporting facilities, and ₦18.59 billion for the rehabilitation and repair of fixed assets.
The establishment of an anti-doping laboratory is expected to not only enhance Nigeria’s credibility in international sports but also serve as a revenue generator.
The budget includes specific allocations for key organizations, with the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) receiving ₦2.25 billion, while the National Institute for Sports is set to receive₦1.88 billion.
This funding is crucial for preparations ahead of major events such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the upcoming Olympics.
As Nigeria gears up for an ambitious year in sports, President Tinubu’s proposed budget reflects a strong commitment to fostering growth and development within the sector.
The government’s focus on infrastructure, support for federations, and grassroots initiatives signals a renewed hope for Nigerian sports as it aims to achieve greater success on both national and international stages.
