President Tinubu Raises Alarm Over Recurring Flood Disasters and Boat Mishaps Despite Warnings

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep concern over the recurring flood disasters and boat mishaps in Nigeria despite repeated warnings issued by relevant agencies.

Speaking in response to recent tragedies including the devastating flood in Yola, Adamawa State and a fatal boat accident on the Niger River President Tinubu condemned the loss of lives and extensive damage caused by these incidents.

He emphasized the urgent need for strict compliance with safety standards on Nigeria’s waterways calling on citizens and entrepreneurs who depend on these waterways for their livelihoods to adhere rigorously to all safety regulations to prevent further mishaps.

The President’s remarks came as part of a broader call for enhanced flood preparedness and waterway safety enforcement nationwide.

Despite multiple warnings from agencies such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Ministry of Water Resources which have highlighted high flood risks in over 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory this year flood disasters continue to inflict heavy losses.

These agencies have repeatedly urged residents in vulnerable communities to take precautionary measures including relocating from flood-prone areas clearing drainage systems and preparing emergency plans.

President Tinubu also conveyed sympathy to the families affected by the recent disasters and reiterated the federal government’s commitment to emergency response and disaster management. He highlighted that these calamities underscore the critical importance of proactive safety measures and community cooperation to minimize future risks.

The Federal Government acknowledging the severe impact of these floods and accidents has allocated resources for emergency relief and continues to urge all relevant stakeholders to strengthen preparedness and public awareness campaigns ahead of the peak flood season.

This call to action by President Tinubu reflects the government’s recognition that while natural factors like heavy rainfall and rising sea levels contribute to floods, human factors such as non-compliance with safety guidelines and inadequate disaster preparedness significantly exacerbate the consequences.

Therefore coordinated efforts between government agencies, community leaders, and citizens remain essential in addressing these persistent challenges to safeguard lives and property.
