Rayan Cherki Sends Fierce Warning to Manchester United After Signing for Manchester City.
Manchester City’s latest acquisition, French sensation Rayan Cherki, has wasted no time setting the tone for the upcoming Premier League season with a fiery warning to arch-rivals Manchester United.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who recently completed a €36.5 million move from Olympique Lyon, has expressed a burning desire for revenge following Lyon’s previous European heartbreak at the hands of the Red Devils.
Speaking to reporters shortly after his unveiling, Cherki was direct about his intentions:
“I wasn’t happy when Manchester United beat Lyon, because I’m a Lyonnais at heart. Now, I’m waiting for the chance to play against them and knock them out,” he declared, referencing Lyon’s Europa League quarter-final exit.
Cherki, known for his flair and creativity, is viewed by many as a potential successor to Kevin De Bruyne, who recently made a surprise switch to Serie A side Napoli.
However, the French international is determined to forge his own legacy at the Etihad rather than living in the shadow of the Belgian maestro.
“I’m not Kevin De Bruyne; he’s a legend. I’m here to contribute to the team and write my own story. I hope to consistently win with the team,” Cherki stated.
Cherki also made his ambitions clear: the Ballon d’Or is in his sights. Inspired by Rodri’s recent triumph as the world’s best player, the Frenchman believes City is the perfect platform to reach such heights.
“Seeing Rodri win the Ballon d’Or here shows it’s achievable at Manchester City, and that’s what I’m aiming for. When I spoke to Pep [Guardiola], he made it very, very clear that he wanted me.”
According to Cherki, Guardiola’s system and philosophy were decisive factors in his move to the Premier League champions.
“Pep told me, ‘When you have the ball, you’re free.’ That’s fantastic for me because my greatest strength is helping the team. The system, the club, the city – it’s all great. I want to win, and I believe Manchester City wants to win everything.”
Though capable of playing wide, Cherki prefers operating in a central role, where his playmaking ability and vision can shine. His signing marks yet another statement of intent by City, who are looking to continue their domestic and continental dominance despite key departures like De Bruyne.
