Renewed Gunmen Attack in Yelwata, Benue Sparks Protests and Heightened Fear Among Residents

Tension and fear have once again engulfed the Yelwata community in Benue State following a fresh attack by gunmen in the early hours of Monday.

Eyewitnesses report that the assault led to widespread unrest, prompting local women to stage protests demanding the withdrawal of soldiers stationed in the area back to their barracks.

The protesters also called for immediate evacuation to Makurdi, expressing deep concerns for their safety.

“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one resident lamented during the protest.

This recent violence comes less than two months after a devastating attack on June 13, where gunmen—suspected to be herders—raided the community, killing approximately 200 people, including internally displaced persons. Many victims were reportedly burned alive in a night of horrific brutality.

The Yelwata community remains on edge as calls intensify for stronger government action to restore security and protect vulnerable residents.
