Reno Omokri Blasts Entertainers and Ex-Footballers Who Go Broke After Lavish Spending
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has criticized Nigerian footballers, entertainers, and artists who squander their wealth during their peak years and later blame the government for their financial struggles.
In a post shared on his official X account, Omokri described such behavior as a form of “mental laziness,” stressing that individuals in the spotlight must take responsibility for their financial future instead of shifting blame.
According to him, athletes and entertainers cannot enjoy the full proceeds of their fame and later expect society to rescue them when things go wrong. He noted that while some may receive gifts, benefits, or entitlements during their national service or from public appreciation, the management of those earnings remains their personal responsibility.
“It is regrettable when national icons die broke or broken,” Omokri wrote, “but their financial outcome should not become society’s burden. You can’t enjoy your success alone and then want to outsource your failure to the public.”
Citing international examples, Omokri pointed out that many celebrities in Europe and America also fall into financial ruin without blaming their governments. He mentioned former English football star Paul Gascoigne, who lost a £20 million fortune and now battles depression, as an example of someone who accepted personal responsibility rather than shifting blame.
Omokri concluded by urging Nigerian entertainers and athletes to learn financial discipline, plan for retirement, and avoid creating what he called an “entitled mentality” that only leads to ridicule.
