Rivers LG Elections: Police Pledge to Crush Cultists, Announce Movement Restrictions
Ahead of the August 30 local government elections in Rivers State, the police have vowed to clamp down on cultists and anyone attempting to disrupt the polls.
The State Police Command assured that all measures are in place to maintain peace before, during, and after the chairmanship and councillorship elections.
State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju said the force has sufficient capacity to prevent any breach of the peace.
He confirmed that human and vehicular movements will be restricted from midnight on election eve until 6 p.m. on election day, with exemptions for essential personnel and election officials who will be issued special passes.
CP Adepoju commended residents for their cooperation and described them as “matured and peace-loving.” He highlighted that all election materials will be escorted, security arrangements are robust, and all stakeholders, including political parties, have signed peace accords.
“The police and all security agencies are ready to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election,” Adepoju stated.
“Those planning trouble should desist as we have taken all necessary steps to check any disruption. Cult activities and vulnerable points have been thoroughly monitored and secured.”
