Rudi Johnson, Former Bengals Pro Bowler, Dies by Suicide
The sports world is mourning the loss of former NFL star Rudi Johnson, who passed away on September 23, 2025, at the age of 45.
According to reports from TMZ, Johnson was found dead in his Florida home, with family sources confirming his death was the result of suicide.
Loved ones revealed that Johnson had long battled mental health challenges, with concerns that the effects of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) may have played a role.
Despite his struggles, they described him as someone whose priority was always helping others both on and off the field.
Born on October 1, 1979, in Ettrick, Virginia, Johnson made his mark as a standout athlete at Thomas Dale High School, where he shattered the school’s rushing record. He later went on to play college football before beginning his NFL career in 2001 with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Johnson played seven seasons with the Bengals, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2004, before finishing his career with the Detroit Lions in 2008. He was admired not just for his contributions on the field but also for his humility and community spirit.
He is survived by his mother, Janice Johnson, who raised him as a single parent and was a strong influence throughout his life. Johnson’s death leaves a deep void in the NFL community, particularly among the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent the majority of his career.
