Rufai Oseni Condemns Bishop Kukah’s Remarks on Christian Persecution

Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni has strongly criticized Bishop Matthew Kukah following the Catholic bishop’s recent viral comments denying ongoing genocide or persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Bishop Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee (NPC), argued that genocide should be judged by intent rather than the number of casualties a statement that has sparked outrage among Nigerians.

Reacting, Oseni described the bishop’s remark that “you can kill 10 million people and it will not be genocide” as insensitive and dismissive of the harsh realities faced by Christians across the country.

He referenced specific incidents of violence, particularly in areas where Bishop Kukah once served, including the killings of clergymen and church members.

Oseni emphasized the moral responsibility of religious leaders to acknowledge and address such tragedies.

Oseni further invoked Pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous quote to highlight the dangers of remaining silent in the face of persecution:

“First they came for the Communists… then for the Socialists… then for the trade unionists… then for the Jews… and then there was no one left to speak out.”
