Security Crisis: France Backs Nigeria as US Delegation Arrives for Investigation

President Bola Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday held high-level discussions centred on Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, with France pledging expanded cooperation to help tackle terrorism and armed groups, particularly in the northern region.

The diplomatic exchange comes at a time of intensifying international concern following the recent abduction of over 300 schoolchildren in Niger State and a surge in bandit attacks across the North-West and North-Central zones.

Sources familiar with the meeting said Macron assured Tinubu of France’s readiness to deepen security collaboration through enhanced intelligence sharing, joint operational support, and strengthened military capabilities aimed at countering insurgent and bandit networks.

France, having scaled down its regional presence after tensions with military juntas in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, is seeking to rebuild strategic partnerships with stable democracies in West Africa.

Nigeria’s size, democratic stability, and regional influence have made it a renewed focal point for the French government. Officials reportedly warned that the continued spread of Sahel-based armed groups into Nigerian territory poses a severe long-term threat that requires coordinated action.

France and the United States are expected to present formal security collaboration proposals in the coming weeks, which could mark one of Nigeria’s most significant multilateral security engagements since the peak of the Boko Haram crisis.

Both countries are urging Nigeria to prioritise improved intelligence coordination, enhanced border surveillance, and reforms that integrate community-based conflict resolution into the national security framework.

As diplomatic consultations continue, Nigerians particularly families of abducted schoolchildren remain hopeful that renewed international attention and cooperation will help accelerate the rescue of their loved ones and bring relief to communities that have endured years of relentless violence.
