Senate President Akpabio Highlights Gender Gap in Nigerian Politics

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the poor electoral performance of female politicians in Nigeria to the lack of support they receive from fellow women.

Speaking on Tuesday while hosting a delegation from the European Union Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, led by David McAllister, at the National Assembly in Abuja, Akpabio said,

“Women often vote for male candidates, making it difficult for female candidates to win elections.”

The former Akwa Ibom governor lamented the persistent gender imbalance in Nigeria’s political space, noting that although women make up nearly half of the electorate, their representation in parliament remains among the lowest in Africa.

Akpabio added that the National Assembly is exploring innovative solutions, including constitutional amendments, to enhance gender inclusion in politics.

He also emphasized collaboration with advocacy groups such as the Black Women’s Forum to promote women’s political participation.
