Senate Stalls on Trump’s $4.5 Trillion Spending Bill Amid Growing Backlash

Efforts by U.S. Senate Republicans to push through President Donald Trump’s sweeping new spending bill have entered a second day, amid growing backlash from both parties and widespread public disapproval.

Dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by the president, the proposal includes plans to extend Trump’s expiring first-term tax cuts at an estimated cost of $4.5 trillion, while increasing military spending and funding large-scale deportation efforts.

However, to finance the plan, the bill would make deep cuts to social welfare programs, including Medicaid, food assistance, clean energy tax credits, and electric vehicle subsidies.

Despite those cuts, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would still add over \$3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Critics say the bill represents one of the most significant redistributions of wealth in U.S. history—shifting resources from the nation’s poorest citizens to its wealthiest.
