Severe Floods Displace Hundreds of Thousands in Northeastern Nigeria, Sparking Urgent Humanitarian Response

Severe floods in northeastern Nigeria have displaced more than 640,000 people and affected over one million others, triggering a major humanitarian crisis in the region.

The floods caused by heavy rains and a breach in the Alau Dam near Maiduguri, have submerged half of the city uprooting hundreds of thousands and destroying homes, livelihoods, and infrastructure.

Maiduguri, a key humanitarian hub, is at the epicenter of the disaster. Over 400,000 people have been displaced in recent days alone due to the flooding. Many of those affected had previously been uprooted by conflict and the climate crisis compounding vulnerabilities in the area

The floods have overwhelmed local resources, with displaced populations seeking refuge in overcrowded schools and camps under dire conditions.

A coordinated humanitarian response is underway involving the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other partners, providing essential aid such as tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets and emergency cash assistance targeted at vulnerable groups like single-parent families. people with disabilities and families with young children

However, the scale of the disaster has led to severe shortages, with supplies meeting less than 10 percent of urgent needs.

The floods have worsened ongoing issues of food insecurity, displacement, and economic hardship in northeastern Nigeria and increased risks of gender-based violence and family separations are causing additional protection concerns

Humanitarian actors warn that once floodwaters recede affected families will face significant challenges in rebuilding destroyed homes and livelihoods.

Nigeria currently hosts 3.6 million internally displaced people, predominantly in the northeast, along with nearly 100,000 asylum seekers and refugees.

Despite a UN appeal for $107.1 million to address these crises funding has only reached 28 percent, underscoring the urgent need for more resources to sustain relief operations.

The humanitarian community is emphasizing the need for immediate, agile, and locally coordinated responses to mitigate the impact of this flood disaster and support recovery efforts across the affected northeastern states.
