Shallipopi Sparks Debate, Calls Relationships and Marriage a Financial Mistake
Nigerian music star Shallipopi has stirred controversy with his recent comments on love, money, and marriage.
The fast-rising artiste warned men to be cautious about entering romantic relationships, claiming they often lead to unnecessary financial strain.
In his statement, Shallipopi described relationships as a “financial trap” and went further to call marriage itself a “financial mistake,” especially for men who are not from wealthy families or privileged backgrounds.
According to him, many men overstretch their finances just to satisfy partners and maintain appearances, a lifestyle he believes creates avoidable hardship. Instead, he advised men to live within their means and avoid trying to impress people at the expense of their stability.
He wrote in a series of posts:
“The biggest financial mistake—when you and your papa no dey Top 10 richest people in Africa—you go cry, bro. OS na financial mistake, girlfriend na financial mistake. Stay celibate.”
The comments sparked heated reactions across social media.
One user, @thehuntersssss, fired back:
“Popi, if your papa and mama no marry, how dem for born you? So your papa make financial mistake?”
Another user, @iretileye, mocked his statement, writing:
“‘You must be rich like Otedola before considering marriage’ – Shallipopi 2025.”
Others joined the debate, some agreeing with him while others dismissed his views as extreme and unrealistic.
For now, Shallipopi’s remarks continue to fuel online conversations about the true cost of relationships and whether love has become too expensive in today’s society.
