Sheikh Gumi Says He Will Lead Call for Nnamdi Kanu’s Amnesty if He Shows Remorse
Renowned Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that he is prepared to champion the call for the pardon and amnesty of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu provided Kanu demonstrates genuine remorse and a commitment to peace.
Gumi made the declaration while addressing questions about his controversial engagement with non‑state actors and armed groups across Nigeria.
“I Advocate for Nigeria, Not Violence”
Responding to critics who accuse him of siding with violent groups, Gumi clarified:
“I’m not advocating for them. I’m advocating for Nigeria, so that we can find lasting solutions to these security challenges.”
He highlighted the growing insecurity in the country, citing incidents such as kidnappings in Kebbi, widespread fear in Kwara and Bauchi, and the increasing operations of armed groups capable of destabilising communities.
Military Force Alone Won’t Work
Gumi argued that relying solely on military action is insufficient.
“You want a military that is trained to fight a guerrilla? Even the U.S., Afghanistan, and Israel have struggled. No army is built to defeat guerrilla warfare,” he said.
