Shettima Slams Jonathan Over Unlawful Sack Attempt as Tinubu Faces Criticism for Fubara Suspension
Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan once attempted to illegally remove him as Governor of Borno State a move that was ultimately thwarted by senior legal officials who told Jonathan he had no constitutional power to do so.
Shettima made the revelation in Abuja at the launch of “OPL245: The Inside Story of the $1.3bn Nigerian Oil Bloc,” a book authored by former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN).
“Former President Jonathan was pushing to remove me from office,” Shettima said. “But the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, boldly told him, ‘You don’t even have the authority to sack an elected councillor.’”
According to the Vice President, Jonathan persisted and raised the matter at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, where Adoke reaffirmed the unconstitutionality of such an action.
“He (Jonathan) took it to FEC, but Adoke said, ‘Mr. President, you don’t have the power.’ Another SAN in the cabinet, Kabiru Turaki, supported Adoke’s position. And that was the end of the plot,” Shettima stated.
In a rare moment of humility, Shettima publicly thanked Adoke for upholding constitutional democracy even during politically turbulent times.
