Six Workers Injured as Building Under Construction Collapses in Lagos
A two-storey building under construction in the Mangoro area of Alimosho, Lagos, collapsed on Wednesday evening, leaving six workers injured and sparking renewed concerns about the city’s recurring building safety crisis.
The structure, located on Modupeola Street near Mangoro Bus Stop, caved in around 6 p.m. while masons and labourers were at work. Witnesses said heavy rainfall earlier in the day may have worsened the situation, with the rear section of the building giving way suddenly.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Fire and Rescue Service arrived shortly after the incident. Five of the trapped workers were quickly pulled out and rushed to a nearby private hospital with varying injuries, while another victim, who sustained a fractured leg and multiple bruises, was transported by ambulance to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
Officials later confirmed that the building, originally constructed as a bungalow, was being converted into a two-storey structure while tenants still occupied the ground floor. The state government has since sealed the property and launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
Residents told reporters that they initially began rescue efforts before help arrived. “It happened so fast during the rain, people didn’t even know until someone raised the alarm,” one resident said.
No deaths were recorded, but the incident has again drawn attention to Lagos’ frequent cases of building collapse. Earlier this month, four lives were lost when a three-storey building collapsed in Ebute Meta, while another incident in July left residents of Isale Eko scrambling to safety after a partial structural failure.
Urban safety advocates are now urging stricter supervision of ongoing construction projects, warning that poor regulation and unapproved modifications continue to endanger lives across the state.
