Sowore Rejects Police Invitation Over Legal Flaws, Demands Valid Summons and Petition Copy
Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, has rejected an invitation from the Nigeria Police Force’s IGP Monitoring Team, citing numerous legal irregularities and demanding a properly issued summons along with the petition against him.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Sowore revealed that he had formally reached out to the IGP Monitoring Team, requesting a valid and legally grounded invitation as well as a copy of the complaint necessitating the summon.
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) disclosed that the invitation claimed he was being called in for allegedly “inciting disturbance” an offence he says does not exist under Nigerian law.
“I have formally requested that the IGP Monitoring Team provide me with a properly issued and legally grounded invitation, and an advance copy of the petition which allegedly necessitates my appearance,” he stated.
According to him, the police have so far refused to honor this request. Instead, the IGP Monitoring Team insists that the original invitation remains valid despite citing what Sowore described as a non-existent offence and an invalid legal reference.
“The previous invitation referenced Section 53(2) of the ACJA 2025 a law that doesn’t exist. It also mentioned ‘inciting disturbance,’ which has no place in Nigerian criminal law,” he added.
Describing the invitation as “fundamentally flawed and legally baseless,” Sowore stressed that his legal team had reviewed the document and confirmed it to be “a complete legal fiction.”
He outlined the conditions under which he would consider honoring a new invitation:
- A properly dated and signed official letter of invitation.
- An advance copy of the actual petition or complaint.
“If you are serious about this matter,” he said, “then follow due process.”
Sowore also shared his response publicly via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, reiterating his stance against what he described as an attempt to use illegitimate means to intimidate him.
“Your initial invitation was invalidated by an alarming number of unknowns and legal fabrications,” he stated.
