Stop Rewarding Looters with Public Office – Emir Sanusi Criticizes FG Over Ministerial Appointments
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly criticized the Federal Government for continuing to appoint individuals with questionable integrity into public office, warning that such actions further erode Nigeria’s already fragile moral foundation.
Speaking during a recent public address, the former Central Bank Governor lamented the rise of leaders who, in his words, “lack proper upbringing” and have turned governance into a means for personal enrichment.
“Many of the people you see in government today were not properly brought up. When I was in King’s College, we were taught civics by the principal himself. From a young age, we learned values honesty, integrity, human rights, and service,” Sanusi said.
He blamed Nigeria’s moral decline on a culture that glorifies wealth, regardless of how it was acquired. According to him, this has led to a system where public thieves are not only celebrated but rewarded with more powerful positions.
“We now live in a country where people who are known to have looted public funds are rewarded with ministerial appointments. There’s no sense of shame anymore just an obsession with material wealth and status,” he added.
Sanusi emphasized the need for urgent reform in the value system, saying the lack of accountability and glorification of corrupt individuals only ensures that Nigeria continues to reproduce corrupt leaders.
“A society where stolen wealth is celebrated will only breed more of the same. We no longer feel disgust when public officers steal we reward them with more offices, more power, and more chances to loot,” he stated.
The Emir’s comments have sparked fresh national debate over the moral qualifications of political appointees and the need for ethical leadership in governance.
