Stuttgart Advances in German Cup, Plus NBA Trade Shakes Up League
VfB Stuttgart secured their place in the German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Augsburg on Tuesday. Deniz Undav’s 29th-minute goal proved decisive in the quarterfinal match.
Undav scored his 10th goal in all competitions after a clever one-two with former Augsburg striker Ermedin Demirović.
Augsburg goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović initially denied Undav in the 25th minute, but Undav managed to score minutes later.
Despite a strong start from Augsburg, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Substitute Mert Kömür forced a good save from Stuttgart’s goalkeeper Alexander Nübel in the second half.
It wasn’t our best performance, but what matters is that we qualified for the semifinals, Undav told ARD after the match.
Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness also acknowledged the team’s performance wasn’t their best but praised their fight.
The victory breaks Stuttgart’s three-match losing streak.
However, midfielder Enzo Millot sustained an ankle injury late in the game following a foul by Dimitrios Giannoulis.
Stuttgart, who last won the German Cup in 1997, are aiming for their first title since the 2006-07 Bundesliga.
In other quarterfinal matches, Bayer Leverkusen will host Cologne, and Arminia Bielefeld will face Werder Bremen. RB Leipzig will also host Wolfsburg.
