Super Eagles Face Uphill Battle for 2026 World Cup Qualification
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has tasked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure the Super Eagles secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This directive comes amidst a challenging qualifying campaign where Nigeria currently sits in fifth place in Group C with only three points after four matches.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko conveyed this charge during NFF President Ibrahim Gusau’s visit to the NSC Secretariat, where they discussed preparations for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in March.
The NSC emphasized the need for the Super Eagles to secure the group’s solitary ticket to the global tournament.
The Super Eagles, under the guidance of newly appointed coach Eric Chelle, face must-win fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March. Chelle has stated that World Cup qualification is his immediate priority, even ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In related news, Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed openness to returning to Spanish club Sevilla, despite recently joining Middlesbrough on loan.
The dates for the Super Eagles’ upcoming World Cup qualifying matches have been confirmed. The team is preparing for critical matches as they aim to improve their standing in Group C.
