Super Falcons Triumph in Comeback to Win 10th WAFCON Title Preparing for Future Challenges

In a thrilling final at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, Nigeria’s Super Falcons overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to stun host nation Morocco 3-2 and secure their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

The victory reaffirmed Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and capped a tournament marked by resilience and skill.

Morocco electrified the home crowd by taking an early lead, with captain Ghizlane Chebbak scoring a spectacular goal in the 12th minute followed by Sanaâ Mssoudy doubling the lead in the 24th minute. The Atlas Lionesses looked set to capture their first continental crown on home soil as they went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.

However, the Super Falcons, under coach Justin Madugu, regrouped during halftime and launched a spirited second-half comeback. In the 64th minute a VAR review awarded Nigeria a penalty after a handball by Nouhaila Benzina which Esther Okoronkwo converted calmly to pull a goal back.

Nigeria’s momentum surged, and in the 71st minute, Okoronkwo turned provider by assisting Folashade Ijamilusi who drilled a left-footed shot to level the score.

With the match edging towards extra time, Nigeria completed the stunning turnaround in the 88th minute.

A well-executed set-piece saw Okoronkwo deliver a precise assist to substitute Jennifer Echegini who coolly netted the winning goal. Despite intense pressure from Morocco in stoppage time the Super Falcons held firm to secure their historic triumph.

This victory marked Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title in 13 editions, underscoring their status as queens of African women’s football.

The win also demonstrated the Super Falcons’ experience, teamwork and unyielding spirit in overcoming a strong Moroccan side buoyed by passionate home support.

Preparations are now underway for upcoming sporting events, with the Nigerian football federation and government officials expressing confidence that the Super Falcons’ success will inspire continued growth and investment in women’s sports across the continent.
