Surrogacy Is Not a Factory, It’s a Bridge” – Ini Edo Opens Up About Her Journey to Motherhood
Nollywood star Ini Edo has shared heartfelt details about her journey to motherhood through surrogacy, emphasizing the emotional connection she developed with her surrogate and calling for a shift in how society perceives alternative paths to parenthood.
Speaking at the Meet Surrogate Mothers IVF Conference in Lagos, Ini Edo offered a deeply personal reflection on her experience. Contrary to common misconceptions, she revealed that she was involved in every step of the pregnancy from prenatal care to emotional support highlighting that intended mothers are far more than passive observers in the process.
“She wasn’t just a vessel,” the actress said, describing her surrogate. “Even though I didn’t carry the child myself, we walked the journey together.”
Edo criticized how surrogacy is often reduced to a transactional or clinical process, calling for a more compassionate and respectful narrative. “People overlook the safeguards, the ethics, and the choice. They forget that love can take many forms,” she said.
The actress praised a recent move by Nigeria’s House of Representatives to ban commercial surrogacy and enforce regulations to ensure ethical practices.
The proposed bill includes provisions for jail terms and fines for those who exploit the process. It mandates that surrogacy agreements be altruistic, not profit-driven, with clear protection for both parties.
“We need legal clarity,” Edo emphasized. “Nigerian law must recognize and protect the rights of mothers who choose surrogacy, ensuring they’re not subjected to lengthy court battles.”
“Surrogacy is not perfect it needs transparency and empathy but it’s not a factory,” she stated. “It’s a bridge between despair and joy, between strangers who become family.”
The actress went further to challenge societal stigma:
“Motherhood isn’t defined by biology. It’s about love, sacrifice, and the life you give a child.”
“If you take nothing else from my story,” she concluded, “know this: sometimes the path to your dreams doesn’t come in the package you expect. But if you trust the journey, you may end up holding a miracle you thought was out of reach.”
