Tambuwal Vows Not to Be Intimidated After EFCC Detention Over Alleged ₦189bn Fraud

Former Sokoto State governor and current Senator for Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has vowed not to be silenced by what he described as “intimidation and blackmail” following his interrogation and overnight detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Tambuwal was released on administrative bail after spending a night in EFCC custody over allegations of misappropriating ₦189 billion during his tenure as governor. Returning to Sokoto on Thursday, he was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters.

Addressing the gathering at his residence, he declared:

“I cannot be intimidated or blackmailed. I believe I shall be vindicated, and victory shall be ours.”

The EFCC confirmed that it is investigating Tambuwal for alleged financial misconduct while in office. However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the probe, describing it as a politically motivated attempt to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recounting his experience, Tambuwal said he honoured the EFCC’s invitation on August 6 but was denied release on personal recognition despite his past positions as Speaker of the House of Representatives, two-term governor, and serving senator.

“They insisted I must present two top civil servants as sureties. My request was turned down. Despite being accompanied by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, I was remanded in Cell N23,” he said.

Tambuwal also accused the Sokoto State government of orchestrating a “Kangaroo investigative committee” against him, insisting no competent authority had found him guilty of any offence.
