Teachers in Ogun State Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

Public primary and secondary schools across Ogun State have been shut down as members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) commenced an indefinite strike on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

In a statement, the NUT said the industrial action became necessary following the Ogun State government’s continued failure to address several critical demands that affect the welfare and future security of teachers in the state.

The union cited unresolved issues including non-payment of an updated minimum wage, eight years of outstanding leave allowances, stalled promotions for 2023 and 2024, and the controversial contributory pension scheme.

“All avenues for dialogue have been exhausted,” the union stated. “The government has repeatedly neglected its responsibility, leaving us no choice but to act in the interest of our members.”

The strike action, which began at midnight, has left many students and parents stranded as teachers across the state heed the call to stay away from classrooms.

The NUT emphasized that the strike is lawful and urged teachers to remain calm while assuring them that the union is committed to securing a better future for all its members.
