Tems Makes History as First African Female Stakeholder in San Diego FC
Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history by becoming the first African female to own a stake in an American soccer club, San Diego FC.
The announcement was made on February 12, 2025, coinciding with her heartfelt acceptance speech for the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards, where she was recognized for her hit song Love Me Jeje.
In a statement released by San Diego FC, Tems expressed her excitement about joining the club’s ownership group through her company, The Leading Vibe. She highlighted the power of football to unite people and her commitment to fostering community engagement.
I am thrilled to join San Diego FC’s ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and the power of community, she stated.
Tems’ partnership with San Diego FC is facilitated by Pave Investments, an African private investment firm known for its involvement in NBA Africa.
This collaboration not only enhances Tems’ influence in sports but also aligns with the club’s mission to empower communities and support youth development through initiatives like the Right to Dream Academy.
San Diego FC Chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour welcomed Tems to the ownership group, noting her global significance as an artist and how her presence will help bridge music, culture, and sports.
The club is set to make its Major League Soccer debut in 2025, and Tems joins a prestigious group of partners that includes actress Issa Rae and World Cup winner Juan Mata.
This landmark achievement for Tems marks a significant step for African representation in sports ownership and showcases the growing intersection between music and sports business.
