Tension in Benin as Youths Accuse Police Officer of Planting Tramadol on Young Man

A clash erupted at Upper Sokponba in Benin City, Edo State, after some youths accused a police officer of secretly placing tramadol in a young man’s pocket.

The incident, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, shows a man in police uniform being confronted and dragged by angry youths. In the background, a voice can be heard alleging: “He put tramadol for him pocket… See police officer, he put tramadol for innocent boy pocket.”

Eyewitnesses said the confrontation quickly escalated, drawing a crowd as the officer struggled against the mob.

The video has since sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians recalling similar encounters with law enforcement.

  • am_Mesigo shared: “They did that to me along Benin–Agbor road, not knowing the pastor in our car was recording them while they tried to plant something near my seat.”
  • Another user, Lucky, recounted: “I remember about three years ago, I was in the DPO’s office when a case came in. The DPO immediately told the policemen they planted the marijuana themselves.”

Others warned citizens to remain vigilant. Eric Efe advised: “Never allow a police officer to put his or her hand inside your pocket without showing you their hand first. That’s how they move mad nowadays.”

The incident has reignited debates about police misconduct in Nigeria, with some commenters warning that public patience may soon run out if such cases continue unchecked.
